Sites of Historic Interest

It’s of little surprise that a region, once occupied by the Romans, so determinedly fought over by the French and English during the Middle Ages, and more recently the focus for resistance to fascist tyranny during the Second World War, now offers the visitor such an array of fascinating historic sites, buildings, villages and towns to explore and enjoy.

From the fairy tale castles of Baynac, Castelnaud and Montfort rising high above the cliffs of the Dordogne river; the picture post-card villages of Martel, St-Cirq-Lapopie and Autoire; the medieval towns of Sarlat, Figeac and Cahors; to the pilgrim site and village of Rocamadour perched precariously 1,500 ft above the Alzou River gorge – the historic sites of the region offer something of interest to everyone.
