A WEEKEND IN LE BOURG

We arrived very late in the evening at Le Manoir after a long difficult drive through hours of torrential rain however we were met by Phillipe who looks after the property. He was most welcoming, friendly and answered our many questions on our initial tour of the property. We were all amazed and thrilled as the photographs did not do this wonderful property justice ( would strongly recommend a virtual tour video) the size and space was fantastic as we were an initial family of four with the rest of our children, partners and grandchild arriving from Sweden and the UK over the next few days. We were a family of 11 in total and never felt crowded and the bonus of the games room with the pool table a huge bonus for our children aged from 15 - 37!

All rooms were comfortable, large and airy with the master suite beautifully appointed. There is much to visit and even spending 2 weeks here we did not manage to visit all we had intended to do. (Worth noting if you wish to visit some of the caves it is worth a telephone call as you have to book and we had intended to do this at the end of our stay but unfortunately there was no availability). Figeac with its Saturday market, pretty town square and wonderful restaurants is a must as is the view at Rocamadour (though a little bit too touristy). But favourite with all of us was Autoire a small historic village so tranquil and beautiful, a mile walk will take you to the wonderful waterfall, an absolute must! Phillipe is fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and he helped us enormously with places to visit etc; in fact we all fell in love with him and felt sad to say goodbye to our friend as he became.

We last visited France over 24 years ago so our French was more than a little rusty but soon managed to get by in fact having always travelled to the Cote d'azur we were unsure as to whether we would like the Dordogne area. In fact on our return we have begun our own property search in this area as we have fallen in love with the natural beauty and space and how friendly everyone was towards us and our family. Nick, (Owner), we can only wish you success in the future for Le Manoir and thank you for the privilege of staying there and the memories we now have of our wonderful family reunion.

We had the good fortune to be able to stay with family in this beautifully restored manor house for 17 days in June. The renovation maintains much of the old character with modern touches especially in the large kitchen and the many bathrooms. Its a great home for families with a super swimming pool (which is padded for the really young) and also for adults with a sports room. We were on the terrace most evenings to relax and the views are delightful.

While there is not a lot in Le Bourg itself, the location is perfect for exploring the gorgeous surrounding area between the Dordogne and Lot rivers. Our favourite places were Figeac (20 minutes away) especially on a Saturday where the market is a must. Rocamadour is 25 mins away and is simply world class, a jaw dropping town nearly 1000 years old set in to the cliffs.

Wine tasting in Cahors (the original home of Malbec), the fabulous town of St Cirq Lapopie and so many more wonderful villages to explore and have lunch. For foodies there are some wonderful michelin starred options - with Chateau de la Treyne and Les trios Soliel de Montal strongly recommended.

We will be back as there is so much more that we did not have time for - travelling down the rivers, visiting the historic caves etc etc. Can't recommend this home highly enough and as my brother said on leaving - "it was a privilege to stay here"

Having known the owner for nearly 40 years, it was a real pleasure to spend a long weekend with him at his place in France to see the fruits of his labour and help him get the place ready for the holiday season. In between sampling the local restaurants (which were very good btw) and helping the guys from Preston set-up the snooker table in the games room, we found time to catch-up and unwind.

The House is fantastic - bags of room, beautifully decked out without being ostentatious, comfortable, generous and very relaxing. If you are looking for a week or two tucked away in the Midi Pyrenees, a stay here will serve you well. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore the region from, or simply relax by the naturally chlorinated pool and cook-up a feast every night, you won't find much to fault. Take it from me, you'll love it. I know I did and plan to take the rest of my clan some day soon
